Even before the deadline for reopening the Strait of Hormuz and reaching a settlement had expired, US-Israeli attacks were launched against Iran's vital oil-rich Kharg Island, as well as its railway bridges and power plants.

Retaliating against Trump's threat, Iran declared that the scope for dialogue had vanished and that there would be no further talks with the US. Iran announced the severance of all diplomatic ties with the United States. The Revolutionary Guards stated that the cities of America's allies in the Gulf region would be rendered uninhabitable. Furthermore, they warned that extracting oil and gas from this region would become a mere pipe dream for the US and its allies. In addition to the Strait of Hormuz, the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait would also be closed off.
