Supreme Court's Major Decision: Caste Status Ends on Religious Conversion

New Delhi:
The Supreme Court has made a significant ruling stating that caste status is applicable only to those associated with Hindu, Sikh, and Buddhist religions. The court emphasized that if a person converts to Christianity or other religions, they lose their caste status and the legal rights associated with it.
Key Highlights:

Only Hindus, Sikhs, and Buddhists are eligible for SC status
Conversion to another religion automatically terminates SC status
After adopting Christianity, one cannot claim protection under the SC/ST Act
Reservation benefits through religion change are considered a betrayal of the Constitution
Returning to Hinduism after conversion requires solid proof and community approval for SC status

What Did the Supreme Court Say:
Justice P.K. Mishra and Justice NV Anjaria's bench stated that a person who adopts Christianity cannot claim protection under the SC and ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. The court clarified that SC status is linked to religion, and thus, converting from Hinduism or other religions results in the automatic loss of this right.
Case Details:
This decision was delivered in response to a plea challenging the Andhra Pradesh High Court's May 2025 order. The petitioner, Chinthada Anand, was previously from the Scheduled Caste (Mala community) and had converted to Christianity, subsequently working as a priest.
He alleged caste-based discrimination and abuse, leading to a case under the SC/ST Act.
Investigation Findings:
During investigation, it emerged that Anand’s caste certificate was canceled after his conversion to Christianity. He has been working as a priest in a church for nearly 10 years.
Earlier Clarifications by Supreme Court:
The court referred to a significant 1985 judgment, stating that if a person returns to Hinduism after converting, credible proof and community approval are necessary for SC status.
The court also emphasized that converting solely to avail reservation benefits contradicts the spirit of the Constitution.
Legal Significance:
The Supreme Court’s ruling makes it clear that caste status is religion-based, and all related rights end with religious conversion. This judgment sets an important legal precedent for future cases.
